Moxie Restaurant

Many new hotels have sprung up in Chiangmai in the past two years. Most of these hotels, like Chedi or Rachamunkah have been built to receive the anticipated increase influx of high end tourists who will, we hope come in droves to visit Chiangmai. The majority of these hotels are designed and decorated in the modern Asian chic style. I guess I mean the style is a mix of modern contemporary designs with touches of Lanna or Thai heritage.

There are many of these hotels in Chiangmai and all of them are very inviting, grand and comfortable. It is therefore rather refreshing for a Thai like me who has spent many nights at these hotels, to find a really modern hotel like D2. When I stayed at D2 I felt like I had the best of both worlds. The design of the hotel itself which is retro-modern made you feel like you were not in Chiangmai. You can be anywhere in a cosmopolitan city of the world. Yet as you come out of the hotel, you are right there at night Bazaar enjoying the local culture in the heart of town.

The hotel itself does not have a single piece of art work to remind you that you are in Thailand or even Chiangmai. Clean lines and fairly stark lobby. The rooms are ultra modern. No carved woods or Buddha images strategically lit are found in the rooms. I liked it very much because it represents a departure from the norm when you least expected. This is a small hotel with only about 120 rooms. I guess you can call it a boutique hotel that is hip and very modern.

Not only did I stay at the hotel for three nights but I tried the food at their only restaurant which acted as coffee shop, and fine dining restaurant. But before I talk about the food I need to mention the bar at the lobby because I find it very inviting. Although it is stark, the way it is lit and design makes you want to sit at the counter and order something cold to drink. Speaking of something cold they have a specialty of the house which is a sweet version of a lemongrass martini. I tried it but it was too sweet for me so I took the liberty of going behind the bar myself and made a dry lemongrass martini for the bartenders to try. So next time you visit D2 stop by the bar and ask the bartender to make my version of a dry lemongrass martini.

Now let’s turn to the food at D2’s only restaurant appropriately called Moxie. Their chefs have created a menu which can be described as a mixture of Pacific-Rim cuisine and Thai fusion. I am sure that by this time you are totally lost. The food here uses Western and Asian cooking techniques in creating these dishes, as well as using ingredients from all over the world. Their carrot Gazpacho is a good example. This cold soup is infused with saffron to give it a slightly yellow color as well as the distinctive saffron scent.

Their spring rolls are stuffed with the standard ingredients but the way the spring roll if rolled is different and makes the food look more appetizing. There are interesting and quite tasty fusion salads which you should try for lunch. The first is the standard Caesar salad with fried soft-shell crab and the other which I liked the idea very much, a mixed salad with fried shrimp and black pepper Thai style. This shrimp dish is usually served as a main course eaten with rice but it goes very well with the salad and the slightly sour dressing which reduces the richness of the shrimp. One particular pasta dish needs to be mentioned. Penne stir-fry with grilled Chiangmai sausage and Thai holy basil. A very interesting and delicious dish.

The sausage is quite aromatic which sautéed with penne and seasoned with soy and a little sugar and topped with very fragrant holy basil makes the dish come out quite remarkable. Another dish I liked the idea very much is Pad Thai using fried wonton as starch. Although the wonton became a little soggy when mixed with the pad Thai sauce, the chefs could adjust the presentation by serving the sauce on the side and put the fried wontons on top of the all the fried ingredients that have already been seasoned. There is a large selection of both Thai and Western desserts that are beautifully presented. I particularly liked their three flavors crème brule and the miniature Pumpkin Sangkaya.

I found it a very refreshing experience staying at the ultra modern D2 and sampling their food. I think this it is a hotel for the new generation and artsy people. You don’t have to be young professionals to appreciate this hotel and its cuisine but you only have to feel it. D2 and Moxie is worth trying, so spend at least a weekend there.
